Why Kerala Grows Robusta

Kerala is India's second-largest coffee-producing state. Roughly ninety-seven percent of what it grows is robusta.
Ask most people in specialty coffee to name a Kerala coffee region and you'll get Wayanad, and then usually nothing. Ask why Kerala grows robusta and you'll get one word: altitude.
Both of those gaps are worth closing. Not because Kerala is secretly a great Arabica origin, it mostly isn't and pretending otherwise helps nobody, but because the actual reasons it grows what it grows are more interesting than the shorthand and they're sitting in plain sight in the Coffee Board's own regional data.
Here's the map we made and what's on it.
First, two things that cause confusion
Species are not varieties. Arabica and robusta are species - Coffea arabica and Coffea canephora, botanically different plants. S.795, Sln.9, Cauvery, Kent and Chandragiri are cultivars: selections within Arabica. S.274 and CxR are the robusta equivalents. Calling S.795 a species is like calling Alphonso a species of fruit.
India grows its own Arabica. Arabica is commercially cultivated here. Indian-grown Arabica does not need to be sourced from another country. Imported coffees are also sold by Indian roasters - that's a separate thing from India's own domestic Arabica production. Obvious written down, but the assumption that Indian coffee means robusta and Arabica means imported is common enough to be worth saying out loud.
With that out of the way, Kerala.
Kerala's three coffee zones
Wayanad - the volume
Northern Kerala, in the Western Ghats. The Coffee Board records its principal recognised coffee-growing region at roughly 600-900 m MSL, though parts of the wider district rise considerably higher - district-wide elevation and the Board's cultivation band are not the same number and conflating them is where a lot of bad writing about Wayanad starts.
The scale is the thing people miss. Coffee covers around 67400 hectares in Wayanad about a third of the district's total cropped area and roughly ninety percent of Kerala's entire coffee area. When we say Kerala is a robusta state, we are mostly saying Wayanad is a robusta district.
Main cultivars are Peridenia, S.274 and CxR. Intercropped with pepper, banana, ginger and vegetables. Wayanad Robusta received a GI registration in 2019.
It is not an important Arabica region. Kerala Agricultural University's own package of practices places Arabica at 1000-1500 m above the band where Wayanad's coffee actually sits.
Idukki and Travancore - the range
The central and southern high ranges, spanning roughly 400-1600 m MSL. That is an enormous spread, and it's the reason this zone resists a single description.
Robusta is the main type here - S.274 and CxR. But the higher, cooler locations genuinely do support Arabica: Sln.6, Sln.9, Chandragiri. The land rises gradually rather than at a hard boundary, so the transition is a gradient, not a line on a map. Not all of Idukki lies between 900 and 1600 m and any claim that treats the whole district as high-elevation Arabica country is wrong.
Grown alongside pepper, banana, ginger, vegetables and other plantation and spice crops.
Palakkad and Nelliampathy - the pockets
Highland pockets east of central Kerala, near the Tamil Nadu border. Smaller coffee areas occur in suitable Western Ghats locations outside Wayanad and the main Travancore belt.
Both robusta (S.274, CxR) and suitable Arabica selections (Sln.6, Sln.9, Chandragiri) are grown, depending on elevation and local conditions. Genuinely smaller in area than Wayanad worth keeping in proportion.
Why robusta leads - and why "no altitude" is the wrong answer
Here is Kerala Agricultural University's own recommendation, side by side:

Look at what elevation actually is in that table: one line out of five.
Kerala's coffee areas are warm and humid. That favours robusta on the temperature axis and the humidity axis independently of height - a plot at 900 m in Wayanad and a plot at 900 m in the Nilgiris are not the same growing environment, because the surrounding climate differs. Add disease pressure, cultivar choice and farm microclimate and elevation becomes one variable among several rather than the whole explanation.
So the honest version is not "Kerala lacks altitude." It's that Kerala's warm, humid conditions and the elevation profile of its major coffee areas, above all Wayanad, which holds the great majority of the state's coffee land, line up with robusta on nearly every axis at once.
And Arabica remains genuinely important in the cooler, higher pockets. Idukki's upper ranges and Nelliampathy are not footnotes.
How coffee is farmed here
Much of Kerala's coffee grows inside a shaded agroforestry system rather than an exposed monoculture. On the poster we've drawn it in section, because the vertical structure is the point:
- Tall native and shade trees form the canopy
- Pepper vines climb the shade-tree trunks
- Coffee grows beneath the filtered shade
- Banana, cardamom and other intercrops occupy the gaps
- Leaf litter feeds the soil
The pepper detail is worth pausing on. The same trunk that shades the coffee carries a second cash crop up its length - one of the more elegant pieces of agroforestry anywhere in the tropics, and completely routine on a Wayanad or Idukki holding.
Shade trees help create the plantation microclimate and support a diverse multi-storey farming system. Intercrops vary from farm to farm; there is no single Kerala planting pattern.
The two species almost nobody mentions
Beyond Arabica and robusta, two more species grow here in small, specialised quantities: Excelsa (Coffea dewevrei) and Liberica (Coffea liberica).
These are distinct from each other - genomic research published in Nature Plants in 2025 supports treating them as separate species rather than two names for one plant. In India they appear as scattered estate trees, boundary plantings, breeding material and small-scale production, found in small and specialised plantings across multiple Indian coffee-growing areas, with strong documentation from South India.
They are not major crops and we shouldn't inflate them. But the same paper notes that excelsa production is increasing in India specifically in response to worsening climate conditions for Arabica and robusta - which makes it a species worth knowing about rather than a curiosity.

Excelsa and Liberica as distinct species
